Diathermy versus Scalpel in Abdominal Skin Incisions: Systematic Review by Abdelaal N in Perceptions in Reproductive Medicine: Crimson Publishers_Journal of Reproductive Health

Objectives: To compare the use of diathermy versus scalpel in abdominal skin incisions to see the variations in post operative pain, incision time, incision blood loss and wound complication rate.

Background: Surgical scalpels are traditionally used for making skin incisions during abdominal surgical operations. The great evolutions in the electrosurgical devices nowadays bring an alternative method for making skin incision by the usage of diathermy skin incision.

Data Sources: Medline databases (Cochrane reviews, PubMed, Medscape, Science Direct) and all materials available in the Internet from 2011 to 2017.

Study Selection: The initial search presented 157 articles of which 8 met the inclusion criteria. The articles were randomized controlled trials compared the use of surgical scalpel versus cutting diathermy in making skin incisions during abdominal operations.

Data Extraction: If the studies did not fulfill the inclusion criteria, they were excluded. Study quality assessment included whether ethical approval was gained, eligibility criteria specified, appropriate controls, adequate information and defined assessment measures.

Data Synthesis: Comparisons were made by structured review with the results tabulated.

Findings: The studies indicated that cutting diathermy could be accepted as an alternative method for abdominal skin incisions.

Conclusion: The studies stated that, the use of diathermy in skin incision during abdominal surgical operations was associated with less blood loss and shorter incision time than the scalpel skin incision. No increase in the postoperative pain and wound complications rate reported with the use of cutting diathermy for abdominal skin incisions.

Effect of Rainfall Trend on Yam Yield in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria by Mohammed J Mamman* in Environmental Sciences

Agricultural production in Niger State like other states in Nigeria is highly vulnerable to climate changeability. Climate change is predicted to have adverse effects on the agricultural sector of the poorer parts of the world especially sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of the study is to investigate and analyse the effect of rainfall trend on the production of yam in Mokwa local government area of Niger state, Nigeria. For the purpose of this research, data were collected from 100 respondents through the administration of questionnaires. Rainfall data covering a period of thirteen years (2003-2015) were also obtained from College of Agriculture Mokwa weather station, while the yearly yam yield for 16 years (2000-2015) was obtained from Niger State Ministry of Agriculture.

Linear regression models and standardized anomaly index were used to analysis the data gathered. The study showed that the trend of mean annual rainfall in the study area was minimal but significant with R2 value of 0.8 for mean monthly rainfall. A strong relationship between rainfall variation and yam yield exist with r2 value of 0.881. The variation in the yield among the years was moderately significant with R2 value of 0.5064. It also showed a positive response between yam yield and moderate rainfall that was well distributed. Extension agent from ministries of agriculture and ADPs should do more in harnessing relevant information on food production in all the local government areas of Niger state so as to build a robust data bank for further research.

Strand corrosion is one of the main causes for the deterioration of Pre-stressed concrete structures. Corrosion decreases strand cross-section, causes material deterioration, induces concrete cracking, degrades bond strength and deteriorates the capacity of PC beams. As the high-stress level of prestressing strand, strand corrosion causes a brittle failure of PC beams without warnings. The potential dangers of corrosion in PC beams would be much more severe than that in reinforced concrete members. The structural behaviors should be thoroughly investigated to insure the serviceability and safety of corroded PC beams.

On the basis of the experimental data we suggest that the differences discovered in certain amino acids concentrations in blood plasma, red blood cells and tumors are criteria in early diagnostics of primary cancerous growth as well as in estimation of the efficacy of specific cancer treatment. Clinical studies on biological fluids and tumors of 1,495 patients with cancer of the mammary gland, lungs, prostate, ovaries, bladder or digestive tract showed significant changes in physiological concentrations of amino acids which either directly or indirectly regulate processes of antitumor response, oncogenesis, immunogenesis and apoptosis were shown. Our strategy of application of amino acids as medicinal preparations includes a targeted effect on the functional and metabolic relationships which are changed in specific pathology through the effect on the regulatory mechanisms of intermediate metabolic reactions, limiting stages of metabolic flows, utilization of energy substrates and transport systems restricting the processes of amino acids pool formation. The creation methodology of pathogenetic compositions of amino acids and their derivatives on the basis of their physiological concentration for practical application of their regulatory effects in oncology was discussed.

Aerostatic porous bearings have been investigated in the last decades for precision engineering designs, since these bearings offer zero-friction and high operating speeds, as well as providing a very precise positioning system without external influence. Numerical methods such as CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) play an important role in the design and behavior analysis of porous aerostatic bearings, being possible to adjust the geometry and characteristics of the porous restrictor even before its manufacture In the present work, the behavior of the gas at the inlet and outlet of a porous thrust bearing made of cementitious composites is analysed by numerical simulation using CFD method. The results reveal a stable behavior of the cementitious porous bearing and a good correlation between numerical and experimental load capacities.

The first view was a Cochrane reviews done in 2008 that showed that early anticoagulation within two weeks of stroke onset was associated with fewer recurrent strokes compared to no anticoagulation but at the costs of increased symptomaticintracranial hemorrhages. The conclusion was that early anticoagulation did not improve outcomes [1].

Another studies done by Italians scientist showed that early anticoagulations within 48 hours of stroke had no benefit compared to aspirin or placebo [2].

The 2013-2016 West Africa Ebola virus outbreaks was the first anywhere in the world to reach epidemic proportions - causing approximately 28,616 suspected cases and 11,310 reported deaths. The first cases of the deadly diseases were reported in Guinea in December 2013 and later spread to neighboring Liberia and Sierra Leone, with minor outbreaks in Nigeria and Mail and cases also being exported to Europe and the USA. WHO was widely criticized for its delay in taking actions to address the epidemic. Expected early alert is meant to mobilize foreign aids and actions. On August 8, 2014, WHO officially declared the outbreak a publichealth emergency of international concern. This declaration triggered a surge in outside help, for instance, U.S. President Barack Obama ordered up to 3,000 troops to Liberia and promised medical resources and the constructions of as many as 17 Ebola treatment centers in the region, with about 1,700 treatment beds. Britain pledged £20 million to build Ebola clinics, China sent a 59-person lab team and Cuba sent more than 400 health workers (Figure 1).

In the world of continually growing populations of health compromised individuals, there is an expanding list of pathogenic microorganisms. The list normally includes mainly bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa. While the discovery of domain Archaea is considered relatively recent, its biological interaction with human life is still mysterious at different perspectives. This domain is highly distributed globally, even in the harsh environmental conditions, where the possibility of life form existence was excluded. The difficulty of culturing many of Archaeal organisms using conventional culture media is a true barrier for any detection and/or studying of these entities. Only when new bimolecular technologies came into play, some of the ambiguity of these single-celled organisms has begun to resolve. Accordingly, many of Archaeal species may pass the quality control tests undetected to the final consumers. No solidly established data are available till now on our hand about spoilage of food products either preserved or not on storage by Archaea. Moreover, all studies about probable link between certain disease conditions and the presence of Archean are speculating and no true relation was established till now. Thus, the disregard of these microorganisms-especially those on, inside, very close to the human body and the surrounding environment-as potential threat to our life may be a haste discussion when no scientifically rational evidence are available till now. Extensive studies are required to solve this dilemma in a timely manner.
